About the Performance
Guest conductor Fabien Gabel and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra performed Debussy’s La mer at a concert in Orchestra Hall on November 17, 2015. The performance was dedicated “to our friends in Paris following the tragic events of November 13”.
About the Artists
Fabien Gabel
Fabien Gabel was born in Paris on September 10, 1975 into a family of accomplished musicians. He began studying trumpet at the age of six, honing his skills at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and later at the Musik Hochschule of Karlsruhe.
In 2002, Monsieur Gabel pursued his interest in conducting at the Aspen Summer Music Festival, where he studied with David Zinman. Zinman invited him to appear as a guest conductor at the Festival in 2009. After working for a time as an assistant to Bernard Haitink and Sir Colin Davis, Gabel was appointed Music Director of the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec in 2012.
Detroit Symphony Orchestra
The Detroit Symphony Orchestra is a North American orchestra based in Detroit, Michigan. Its primary performance venue is Orchestra Hall at the Max M. Fisher Music Center in Detroit’s Midtown neighborhood. The Italian conductor Jader Bignamini was appointed Music Director in 2020.
