About the Ensemble

A piano trio inspired by the ‘Golden Age’ of romantic performing, Tristan Trio was founded in 2025 by cellist Tyler Michael James, pianist Aljoša Jurinić, and violinist Thomas Lee Cooper. With performances on the Bar Harbor Music Festival, Fermata Chamber Soloists and Red Door Chamber Music, the trio has stormed onto the music scene, quickly become a soughtafter ensemble known for “excellent emotional storytelling,” (Boston Musical Intelligencer).

About the Artists

Thomas Lee Cooper

A violinist having “glimmering silver thread of tone,” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) with “dark grainy power” (The Arts Fuse) Thomas Lee Cooper brings lyrical intensity and refined artistry to every performance.

A Boston area native, Thomas has performed across North America, Europe, and Asia. A laureate of multiple competitions - including Cremona International Competition and Washington Competition - Thomas is particularly passionate about conductor-less ensemble playing, and has performed with some of the country’s finest chamber orchestras, including the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and A Far Cry.

In the 2025-2026 season, Thomas appears regularly as a soloist and chamber musician including engagements with the Boston Landmarks Orchestra, the Bar Harbor Music Festival Orchestra, Museo Stradivari in Cremona, and Scena Amadeo in Zagreb.

Thomas received his early training from the late Hungarian violinist and musicologist, Stephen Erdely. He completed his Master’s degree at the New England Conservatory and his undergraduate studies at Oberlin Conservatory. He performs on a “Januarius Gaglianus 1751” on generous loan from a private collection.

Tyler Michael James

A passionate cellist with a “soulful, lyrical tone“ (Boston Music Intelligencer) and a “phenomenal color palette” (Radda Rise), Tyler Michael James has performed with such renowned orchestras and groups as A Far Cry, Castle Of Our Skins, and Fermata Chamber Soloists. He is a member of the Tristan Trio, the Lobster Cove String Quartet, and the Garrison Quartet.

As a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborator, James has performed on Rockport Music, Naumberg Orchestral Concert, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 92nd Street Y, the Peabody Institute, New York University, Lyrica Boston, Cherry Street Music, and the Bar Harbor Music Festival,

James is currently on faculty at the Boston String Academy, Project STEP, and the Attacca School of Music. He has had the pleasure of teaching at festivals including the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Montecito International Music Festival, Point Counterpoint, and Four Strings Academy.

Born in Virginia, James received his Bachelor’s degree from New York University’s Steinhardt School on full scholarship under esteemed pedagogue Marion Feldman. He was awarded a joint Master’s Degree and Artist Diploma from the Longy School of Music of Bard College. He earned his MBA at the College of William & Mary with a focus on non-profit structure.

Aljoša Jurinić

Hailed as “a startlingly subtle and visionary pianist” with “a rare blend of charm and mastery”, Croatian pianist Aljoša Jurinić [al-yo-sha YOO-ri-nich] has established himself as a laureate of the world’s most prestigious piano competitions.

Following his win at the 2012 International Robert Schumann Competition in the composer’s hometown of Zwickau, he was a laureate at the 2016 Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition and the 2018 Leeds International Piano Competition, as well as a finalist at the 2015 International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. In 2019, the president of Croatia awarded him the Order of the Morning Star for outstanding achievements in culture and the international promotion of his country.

Aljoša has appeared as a soloist and with orchestras at prominent venues in around 40 countries across five continents, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, Wiener Musikverein, Salle Cortot in Paris, Gasteig in Munich, Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall, Osaka Symphony Hall, La Sala Verdi in Milan, BOZAR in Brussels, Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb, and many others. Further highlights include a 35-day recital tour across China and five sold-out performances in Croatia of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

Aljoša holds a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree from the University of Toronto and a Konzertexamen from the University of Music Franz Liszt Weimar. His artistic development has been shaped by renowned pianists and pedagogues across Croatia, Austria, Italy, Germany, and Canada. Currently based in Boston, USA, he is a Visiting Artist at MIT’s Institute for Medical Engineering and Science, where he collaborates on research projects investigating the biomechanics of piano playing.

The performance begins at 3:00 pm. Join us an hour earlier for a pre-concert discussion about the music on the program. After the performance, you’ll have an opportunity to meet the artist(s) and learn about their backgrounds, interests, and career plans.
